Where do rats live?

Rats and mice are highly adaptable. They can thrive in a variety of environments, including both indoor and outdoor habitats. Whether or not they prefer to live indoors depends on several factors, including the species, availability of food and shelter, and weather conditions. That said, rodents are most likely to nest in places like:

  • Attics
  • Wall voids
  • Basements
  • Crawlspaces
  • Behind appliances
  • Sheds or garages
  • Gardens
  • Beneath concrete slabs

Where Do Rats and Mice Live Outdoors?

Rodents aren’t predisposed to live indoors and often prefer to live outside. However, each species has different nesting habits when outside. For example, roof rats are known for nesting in trees and on rooflines, while Norway rats prefer to burrow in vegetation or near patios. Meanwhile, deer mice are drawn to a wide range of habitats including forests, open fields, and occasionally deserts. In general, though, you’re most likely to find rodent nests in relatively sheltered areas such as inside tree cavities or beneath rocks.

Where Do Rats and Mice Nest Indoors?

If your home offers easy access to food and shelter, rodents will likely invade. However, they tend to choose low-traffic areas with plenty of food and nesting materials nearby. For that reason, you’re more likely to find rodent nests in places like basements, wall voids, and attics. Each species also has their own habits, too; while Norway rats frequently burrow beneath foundations, roof rats often climb up to your attic. Since mice are so much smaller, they can get away with hiding in rooms or behind warm appliances.

How to Find Rodents in Your Home

When indoors, rats and mice try to avoid human activity. You’re more likely to notice signs of an infestation, such as droppings or gnaw marks, well before you come across a live rodent. That can make it challenging to locate a rodent nest on your own. If you suspect you have rats or mice in your home, it’s best to contact a licensed exterminator as quickly as possible. Attempting to deal with an infestation on your own puts your health and property at risk. A rodent control expert can help you quickly and safely remove the rodents while protecting your home against future pest invasions.
